Our Farm in May

Good morning from The Meadow! We’ve been planting, welcoming new chickens and ducks, watching the animals enjoy the warm weather, and getting ready for plein air season in this very busy, very alive spring.

Hi all,

Good morning from The Meadow!

I just wanted to share a little update on what’s been happening here at the farm. We’ve been getting up super early lately, spending the days preparing soil, planting, watering, and trying to keep up with the sudden shift in weather. It feels like we went from winter to summer in the blink of an eye, and now we’re rushing to get as much planted as we can before it gets too hot.

The animals are definitely feeling the energy of spring and summer, too. Everyone has been running around, finding soft spots in the dirt, searching for little surprises, and soaking up the sun.

Tasha and Luna have also developed a very interesting coexisting relationship. I think Tasha feels safe near her, maybe because of their similar coloring. She follows Luna around quite a bit, even though Luna does not seem completely thrilled about it.

We also have a few new additions to the farm: three chickens named Clover, Nutmeg, and Peppermint, and three ducks named Florence, Tomie, and Grandma.

We have also had a loss over the past few months, which we are still trying to process. I think that is one of the difficult realities of caring for animals in the countryside. We lost our duck Barb, and we miss her very much.

Out in the field, we have bees now. Our friend Joanna decided to bring her bees to the farm, and we are so excited about it. One of our biggest hopes for The Meadow has always been to create a little ecosystem, so having bees here as pollinators for the flowers feels really special.

Kyle and I have been working hard breaking new ground for more rows of flowers for u-pick, and planting all the little plant babies we’ve been nurturing in our tiny makeshift “greenhouse” room. We do have a small quantity of beautiful flowers this spring from the green house.

And for me, this weather means one more very exciting thing - plein air season is here! I’m excited to bring my paints outside again and start sketching the farm in this busy, blooming season.

I’ll be sharing more from the flower field and my plein air sketchbook soon, but for now I just wanted to say hello from this very busy, very alive season at The Meadow.

More soon from the field,

Ginnie
